Bishop Joseph W. Walker’s home struck by lightning

Nashville, TN (The Gospel News Wire) August 5, 2008.  On Wednesday, July 30th, a severe thunder/lightning storm tore through Nashville, Tennessee striking the home of Bishop Joseph W. Walker, III. By God’s mercy, Bishop Walker was traveling when the storm hit and was not at home; there were no injuries.

Extensive damage occurred after the home was struck by lightning, caught fire and flooded. Much of the interior was destroyed nearly beyond repair.   Fire officials stated that the fire started in the upstairs theater room.

Bishop Walker will be displaced from his home for up to eight months. His house will require a comprehensive restoration to eliminate signs of substantial smoke and water damage. In addition, complete remodeling services for much of the estate are necessary.

As reported by Nashville NewsChannel 5's Helicopter, repairmen were on the scene to cover the holes on the roof after the lightning strike.

Statistics show that an average of 62 people in the United States are killed by lightning each year and hundreds of others are injured. Those struck may also be affected by long-term symptoms including numbness, dizziness and memory loss.

“I was originally supposed to have major dental surgery on that day [Wednesday 7/31], and would have been at home, heavily medicated, and most likely unaware of my surroundings. The divine providence of God changed my plans”, stated Bishop Walker. "I thank God for the continued prayers from everyone.

Experts suggest, “When a home is damaged by lightning, it leaves many with a sense of instability”, but we are grateful to God, for PEACE in the midst of this storm.

On Sunday, August 3rd, less than a week after the incident, Bishop Walker gave testament to God’s peace as he preached a passionate and fiery sermon during all 5 of his sermons at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Reflecting on the death of his wife just three years ago and now experiencing the loss of his home, Bishop Walker made an emotional comparison of the Potter’s hand still applying pressure to shape the nature of his life. By the grace of God, Bishop Walker is yet again praising his way through.
