Church Gives Congregation $25,000

It’s not everyday that a church hands out money to its members. On Sunday, a Brentwood congregation divvied up $25,000 in an effort to live like Jesus.

Nearly 5,000 members at Brentwood United Methodist Church were handed an envelope during Sunday’s service. Inside they found $5, $10 or $20.

By Wednesday they should have an idea of how they will spend the money.

“This is about hooking up our story to the story of Christ,” said Senior Pastor Cliff Wright.

Carol Bumbalough already has ideas on how to multiply and then spend her $5. She plans to buy materials to make signs for a garage sale, and then send the proceeds to a primary school in South Africa.

Bumbalough said she was inspired by the sermon that told the biblical story of Jesus feeding 5,000 men with only a few loaves of bread and some fish.

“That Sermon was very challenging because it helped us to see nomatter what we have whether it’s a lot or a little if you make it available to God, God will do something really amazing with it,” said Bumbalough.

On March 14, the congregation will come together and share their plans on how to use the money.

The only rule is that the money cannot be donated back to Brentwood United Methodist Church.
