In the northern part of Tennessee there is a rich history hidden in one of the country’s earliest African American settlements.
Understanding the history requires a long climb up the winding Clay County road to the top of Free Hill.
Free Hill Church of Christ is the oldest black church in American history built in 1816.
“This is one of the oldest pews. I think it was hand made,” said Free Hill resident Mary Bartlett.
The name Free was given by the slaves who were freed here before the civil war. The name Hill comes from Virginia Hill, the woman who let them go.
“It makes me feel good that something that black people have that’s still there. They can say this is ours nobody else can come get this. This is ours,” said Bartlett.
This community once boasted a population of 400, but today only 50 people call Free Hill home. Last Sunday’s attendance of 28 is nothing compared to the congregation of 80 that once came here for God’s message.
The elderly are dying, the young move away and Free Hill’s history is in danger.
Free Hill is also home to the two room Rosenwald School that was built at least a hundred years ago. That school now serves as a community center.
